30 August 2026  |  Regulation

BIDA is now Invest Bangladesh

Three investment agencies became one on 20 August. If your company is foreign-owned, some of your paperwork now belongs to an authority that did not exist last month. Here is what actually changed, and what is worth checking.

What changed

Under the Invest Bangladesh Act, 2026, three agencies have been merged into a single authority called Invest Bangladesh: the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) and the Public-Private Partnership Authority (PPPA). The government issued the gazette on 20 August 2026 and the new authority has begun operating.

The reported terms are that the assets, records, contracts and liabilities of all three agencies transfer to Invest Bangladesh, and staff continue under the new authority. It runs with an eight-member structure whose chairman is also its chief executive, and its wings and internal teams are still being formed. The old web address already answers for the new one: bida.gov.bd now lands on investbangladesh.gov.bd.

What this is not

The merger sits at the investment-authority layer, and it is easy to read more into it than is there. Company incorporation has not moved: RJSC is a separate office and your registration there is untouched. So is the NBR; nothing about VAT, income tax or your BIN changes because of this. If your company is fully local and never dealt with BIDA, this reorganisation is background noise.

Who it does touch is the companies that went through BIDA: registered foreign or joint-venture projects, branch, liaison and representative offices, work permits for foreign staff, and the services that ran through its one-stop platform. Those files now live with Invest Bangladesh.

Five things worth checking if you are foreign-owned

  • What you hold that BIDA issued. Registrations, approvals, permission letters. The reported position is that they transfer with everything else, but a transition is exactly when a file goes quiet, so know what you hold and keep copies.
  • Anything pending. An application that was sitting with BIDA in mid-August is now an application sitting with a new authority whose internal teams are still being formed. If something of yours is in that queue, ask where it stands rather than assuming the clock is running normally.
  • Work permit renewal dates. A renewal that lands during the transition deserves a head start, not a last-week submission. The counter that processes it is being reorganised while it processes.
  • Names in your own paperwork. Compliance calendars, engagement letters, group manuals and standing instructions that say BIDA should start saying Invest Bangladesh as documents come up for renewal. Not urgent, but cheaper to do on the next revision than to explain later.
  • Your head office’s expectations. If group reporting or covenants reference approvals from a named agency, tell the parent now that the agency has a new name and the approvals transfer. A one-line note today beats a diligence question later.

Where we stop

We are not lawyers and this is not legal advice. Registrations, permissions and anything that has to be argued with an authority belongs with licensed professionals, and where our setup work touches that boundary we coordinate with them and say which parts are theirs. What we keep is the finance side: books and records in a state where a regulator, an auditor or your own head office can read them without a reconstruction.

If you are a foreign-owned company and the finance side is the part that worries you, that page is here. If you are setting up and want the numbers to work from day one, that is the advisory work.

Checked on 30 August 2026. This describes the position as we found it, with sources below. The authority’s internal structure is still being finalised and procedures may be reissued under the new name. Confirm the current position with Invest Bangladesh or with whoever advises you before you act on any of it.
