HomeWorking alongside your accountant
Financial leadership

Your books are covered.
Your decisions are not.

Your bookkeeper records what happened. Your CPA keeps you filed. Neither of them was hired to tell you what to do next, so you have been doing that part yourself. We take that job on, monthly. It works either way round: we can sit on top of the people you already have, or run the whole back office.

Does this sound familiar

Six signs it is the decisions, not the accounting

If three of these are true, you are doing a job nobody was hired for.

You get a clean set of reports each month and still are not sure what they mean for the next six.
The forecast lives in a spreadsheet you built, and you are the only one who can update it.
You have been putting off a hire because you cannot tell whether the business carries it.
Prices have not moved in two years because nobody has modelled what a rise would do.
You know last month's cash. You do not know March's.
A bank, a board or an investor asked for something and you built it yourself, at night.
Who does what

Three jobs. You are probably paying for two.

Your bookkeeper

Records what already happened

  • Codes the transactions
  • Reconciles the accounts
  • Closes the month and sends the reports

Keep them. If they are doing this well, replacing them costs you money and history.

Your CPA

Keeps you filed and compliant

  • Prepares and files the returns
  • Answers the tax questions
  • Shows up once or twice a year

Keep them too. We are not a public accounting firm and we do not file returns. Your CPA stays your CPA.

The third job, and where we come in

Tells you what to do next

  • Whether you can afford the hire, and when
  • Whether the price increase holds, and what it does to margin
  • What cash looks like in March, not what it was in January
  • Which customers, products or contracts actually make money
  • What to put in front of a board, a bank or an investor

Today this job is being done by you, or by your COO, in the hours after everything else.

The work

What the leadership layer actually does each month

Not a report. A person, on a schedule, whose job is the decisions.

1

We read the close your bookkeeper produced

Not to redo it. To see what moved, what it cost, and what it says about the next quarter. Where something looks wrong we raise it with whoever keeps the books, and they fix it.

2

We keep a forecast that is actually maintained

A rolling view of revenue, cost and cash, updated against what really happened, so the number you make decisions on is this month's and not the one from the model you built in January.

3

We model the decision in front of you

The hire, the price change, the new location, the piece of equipment, the contract with sixty day terms. You get the two or three outcomes and what has to be true for each one.

4

We prepare what other people ask you for

Board packs, bank and lender requests, investor updates, diligence lists. Built once, kept current, so a request does not turn into a weekend.

5

We sit on a call every month and tell you what we think

The part that does not fit in a document. What we would do, what we would wait on, and what is going to become a problem in two quarters if nothing changes.

How it works in practice

How it fits with the people you already have

Your bookkeeper keeps the books

We get read access to the accounting file and the reports. We do not take the work off them and we do not bill you for it twice.

Your CPA keeps the filings

We are not a public accounting firm. Returns, tax positions and anything that needs a licence stay with them. We make their January easier by handing over numbers that are already closed and explained.

We talk to both of them

With your say-so, directly. Most of the friction in a finance function is three people who never speak to each other, and you in the middle relaying it.

You can add the layers below later

If the bookkeeping does turn out to be the weak part, we can take that on as well. Plenty of clients start here and never need to.

Stop being your own CFO

Hand the decisions to someone whose job they are. Keep whoever you already have, or let us take the whole back office. We reply the same day, or by the next business day.
